Port Blair Tour Under 20

Havelock island in just Rs.20

Port Blair is considered to be one of the most exotic holiday destinations of India. It offers some of the best sea food delicacies and views to die for. It has a number of Islands under its united territory which includes 3 main islands namely Havelock Island, Ross Island and North Bay Island. These islands pose a major tourist attraction and have a number of activities and water sports available for tourists and locals as well.

As Indians you must have all seen the Rs. 20/- note belonging to the Indian currency? If you haven’t examined it that closely, try and take a look at it as you are going through this personal account. You’ll find an image of an island covered with palm trees at the back of the note, that is the Havelock Island, as seen from GB Pant Hospital’s Balcony.

This island is the largest and the most popular island of Port Blair and has the best beaches by the turquoise blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. Even the journey to the Havelock Island from Port Blair is in itself an adventure, especially if you choose to take the local ferry.  There is only one ferry that takes tourists and locals to the island from the main island of Port Blair, the Havelock Island Government Ferry. This ferry is scheduled at 6.00 am, 11.30 am and 2.00 pm from Port Blair to Havelock and at 9.30 am, 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm the other way round.

Havelock Island Tour

The Ferry Ride

The ferry ride between Port Blair and the Havelock Island takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes and has two types of tickets available for it, one is priced at Rs. 150/- and the other costs Rs. 250/-. There is one more private ferry that has recently started its transport services from Port Blair to Havelock Island and vice-versa, which completes the one way journey in just 90 minutes.

In spite of having a faster option, I preferred to take the Government ferry from Port Blair even though it took more than 2 hours. I actually intended to enjoy the ferry ride, feel the cool sea breeze on my face and watch the Havelock Island from a distance, matching it with the image on the Rs. 20/- note.
As the ferry proceeded towards the island, I could feel the gentle and salty breeze on my face, flowing through my hair. I felt like Rose from Titanic, standing at the edge of the terrace of the ferry, against the railing. I had taken the Rs.250/- ticket so that I can get the best view from the terrace and complete my experience of the ferry ride through the Bay of Bengal.

After about an hour or so the Destination Island started appearing and as the ferry moved closer, it started looking like the picture on the Indian 20 rupees note that was in lying in my pocket. I took the note out and held it up, holding it from both ends and tried to match the two views and voila, my bucket list meant for the ferry ride from Port Blair to Havelock Island was complete.

As the ferry moved closer, the island began resembling the image on the note, more and more. Gradually, the image began appearing like a miniature model of the original and vast Havelock Island, just as Bonzai Plants resemble dwarfed trees.

As the stipulated time assigned to the journey came to an end, the ferry started docking at the port of the Havelock Island and my most awaited part of the visit to Port Blair came to a happy ending. Although I could have had the same experience on the ride back to Port Blair, but then that would be moving away from the Island and not close to it. I wanted to zoom in to the beautiful and vast Havelock covered with green vegetation and palm trees for an evergreen and memorable experience.
