Transportation in Port Blair

Sea and Air are the only two ways that connect Port Blair to the other countries of world. Port Blair is linked with Delhi, Madras, Kolkata and Bhuvaneswar by air. A daily flight connects Port Blair to the rest of the world and islanders. Andaman is connected to Chennai, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam through sea. Ferries links Port Blair with other islands in Andaman and Nicobar groups.

Visitors usually have to depend on ferries, boats, auto-rickshaws, local buses, private hire cars, scooters and motorcycles to travel within Port Blair. Local buses are cheap option for intra-city and inter-city level. You can hire private cars for local sightseeing around Port Blair and South Andaman. Even though scooters & motorcycles are available for hire, it is very limited to avoid speed drive and driving without license. There are scheduled helicopter services for inter-island travel.

Some tips before you leave for Port

Foreigners need permission to visit the Andaman Islands, which is obtained on arrival at Port Blair. However, they are not permitted to visit Nicobar and other southern islands using this permit which is valid for about 15 days. Those, who want to visit Port Blair, can apply for permit from overseas to the Deputy Secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs. As a part of protecting the natural attractions in Port Blair, visitors are banned to take coral out of the islands. ‘The State Government Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism’ at Port Blair gives the relevant information to the tourists.
