Women Welfare in Port Blair

There is no doubt that since the dawn of history, women have been treated inferior to man and have been denied from their social rights. Child marriage, dowry-system, polygamy etc. are some of the social evils against women, which are still happening in some remote areas of our country. Social Welfare Department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands have established several programmes and schemes aiming to uplift the condition of women in the islands.

Self employment for women

Social welfare department also enable the economically backward women to undertake self-employment venture by providing training in various vocations. It will help them improve their economic condition.

Safety for working women

Social welfare department has a scheme of establishing and running hostels for working women with an aim of promoting greater mobility for women in the employment market. It helps provide safe and cheap accommodation for working women who come from far off places. At present, there are two working women’s hostels working in the head quarter area, Port Blair.

Financial support for widows

Social welfare department gives Rs 500 per month to widows of the islands here, irrespective of their age as a financial assistance. It is a great help for the women who do not receive any financial support from any other source or have no other source of income.

Protection for women against violence

The Social welfare department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands implemented provisions under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The department appointed 5 Protection Officers under this Act.

Nowadays, the position of women in Andaman and Nicobar in society has changed a lot and they have started experiencing respect among public, as a result of Social welfare department and other various NGOs functioning in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
